Have you noticed that your gums bleed when brushing and flossing? This symptom is often a sign of early gum disease – gingivitis. If treated right away, the symptoms can be reversed; however, if left untreated, harmful bacteria can further attack the gums and cause inflammation that can lead to bone and tooth loss as well as overall health issues, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even negative cognitive decline. This is why Dr. Lee offers gum disease treatment in St. Augustine in the form of scaling and root planing and antibiotic treatment. Call us today to schedule an appointment.

Scaling & Root Planing

When plaque and tartar accumulate on your teeth, you may find that brushing and flossing are not enough to fully remove it. In this situation, we will perform a deep cleaning, which involves what is known as scaling. This requires the removal of build-up on teeth and around the gumline. We’ll then move on to root planing, which involves smoothing out the roots of your teeth so that bacteria have a harder time adhering in the future.

Antibiotic Treatment

As a complement to scaling and root planing, Dr. Lee can apply Arestin, a concentrated antibiotic that works to target bacteria that remain within the gum pockets. When directly applied, it slowly disperses over several weeks, eliminating any harmful particles that still exist and attempting to attack your gum tissues. The medicine will then reduce the size of your gum pockets and allow for quicker healing.
