What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that gets secured over the entirety of a tooth that protrudes above the gumline. Its purpose is to protect a weak or damaged tooth. It can also restore both its function and appearance.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. That sounds like quite a mouthful, but the concept is pretty easy to understand. Basically, it means that we use CAD/CAM technology to design and fabricate dental crowns right here in our office! The process usually takes just a few hours and can often be completed in a single appointment.
CEREC crowns are more convenient overall than those made in a laboratory.
The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

To start the CEREC crown process, we will have to prepare your tooth. This usually involves removing a bit of its enamel. This is done under local anesthesia to prevent pain.
Then, we use a scanning device to capture a three-dimensional digital representation of your mouth. Next, Dr. Lee uses that impression to design your custom crown. Once the design is finalized, it gets sent to our in-office milling unit, which then creates the crown out of high-quality ceramic that is shade-matched to your smile.
To complete the process, we inspect the crown and take care of any finishing touches before we attach it to your tooth.
Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

CEREC same-day crowns offer some noteworthy benefits over their traditional counterparts:
- The CEREC process usually takes just one appointment. This saves you time and spares you from having to make multiple trips to our office.
- No need for a temporary crown. Temporary crowns can be unsteady and uncomfortable. CEREC technology can allow you to skip this step of the crown process.
- Digital impressions. Manual impressions can be messy and uncomfortable. The digital scanning process is easier for most patients.
- CEREC crowns can be just as durable as ceramic crowns made in a dental laboratory.
- CAD/CAM technology can allow you to get a restoration that is a perfect fit for your tooth and overall bite.
- Often, the cost of CEREC crowns is comparable with those made in a lab.
