What is BOTOX?

Close up of vial of botulinum toxin

BOTOX is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as treat TMJ-related issues such as migraines and jaw pain. Clinically known as botulinum toxin, it is designed to temporarily weaken muscles by blocking the nerve signals so that they do not contract. When smiling, laughing, frowning, or performing any other facial expression, BOTOX prevents further lines and wrinkles from forming. It also targets the same muscles that may tense up and lead to serious jaw pain and migraines.

At Total Dental Care: Tony Lee, DMD, Dr. Lee uses a Botox-like treatment known as Xeomin.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®?

Generally, if you have any of the following issues but are in good overall health, you can expect to be cleared for BOTOX:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines (top of the nose, between the eyes)
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Glabellar lines (between the eyebrows and above the nose)
  • Vertical lines (around the lips)
  • Chin dimples
  • Neck
  • Chronic migraines
  • TMJ pain

However, some should not move forward with BOTOX treatment. Dr. Lee will likely suggest an alternative solution if you experience neuromuscular disease, weak facial muscles, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

When it comes to receiving BOTOX, it’s important that you schedule a consultation with Dr. Lee. Certified to administer injectable treatment, he can discuss your overall medical history and determine if BOTOX is right for you.

BOTOX FAQs

Is BOTOX Safe?

Botox is generally safe when administered by trained and licensed professionals, like us, in appropriate doses. It contains botulinum toxin, which temporarily relaxes muscles, and is widely used for cosmetic purposes (e.g., reducing wrinkles) and medical conditions (e.g., migraines, muscle spasms).

Of course, there are potential complications. Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, or discomfort at the injection site. Rare complications, like drooping eyelids or allergic reactions, can occur, typically if improperly administered. We do everything we can to make sure that your treatment goes as smoothly as possible and will keep the risk of these side effects occurring to a minimum.

Is BOTOX Permanent?

Botox is not permanent. Its effects typically last 3 to 6 months, depending on the area treated, the dosage, and individual factors like metabolism and muscle activity.

Over time, the treated muscles gradually regain their function as the botulinum toxin's effects wear off. This means wrinkles or symptoms may return to their previous state if you don't repeat the treatment.

Regular maintenance sessions can help prolong results. However, with consistent use, some individuals notice that their muscles "retrain," and the intervals between treatments can increase.

How Can I Prolong My BOTOX Injections?

To prolong the effects of Botox, focus on these key strategies:

  • Follow Aftercare Instructions: Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent toxin migration.
  • Limit Sun Exposure: UV damage can break down collagen and skin elasticity, potentially shortening Botox results. Use sunscreen daily.
  • Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Proper hydration and a balanced diet rich in antioxidants support skin health.
  • Avoid Stress and Intense Exercise: Excessive stress and vigorous workouts can stimulate muscle activity, reducing Botox's longevity.
  • Use Complementary Skin Treatments: Maintenance treatments like dermal fillers or good skincare products may enhance results.
  • Schedule Regular Maintenance: Consistent appointments help prevent muscles from fully regaining their activity.

We recommend discussing your specific goals during your next session to tailor a plan that suits your needs.

Who Should Not Get BOTOX?

Botox isn’t suitable for everyone. People who should avoid Botox include:

  • Pregnant or Breastfeeding Individuals: Safety for these groups hasn’t been fully studied, so we advise against it.
  • Allergic to Botulinum Toxin: Those with known allergies to the ingredients in Botox should avoid it.
  • Neuromuscular Disorders: Conditions like ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may increase the risk of complications.
  • Skin Infections or Active Inflammation: If the injection area has a rash, infection, or irritation, wait until the skin is healed.
  • Severe Allergies or Chronic Respiratory Issues: These may pose additional risks, particularly during treatment.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: Individuals expecting permanent or transformative results may not be ideal candidates.

Before treatment, we conduct a thorough consultation to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for you. Always disclose your medical history and medications for the best guidance.
